RHINELANDER – Area families are invited to take part in an upcoming program that aims to help youth and caregivers build stronger relationships and healthier futures.
According to a release from the Oneida County Health Department (OCHD), the Strengthening Families Program is an evidence-based program that has been used successfully for more than 30 years across the United States and around the world.
OCHD said the program is known for increasing family communication and connection; building youth life skills and confidence; and reducing risk factors related to substance use, behavior challenges, and youth depression.
The next session of the program is slated to begin on Monday, March 23. Families with children and teens ages seven to 17 are encouraged to participate.
Classes are held weekly for two hours and include both youth and caregivers. In the first hour, parents and youth meet separately for age-appropriate lessons, while caregivers learn positive parenting strategies and youth build life skills and refusal skills. In the second hour, families come together for guided activities that encourage communication and teamwork.
The classes also include free family dinners and onsite childcare for younger siblings.
The Strengthening Families Program is free of charge, and space is limited. Families are encouraged to register early by contacting Cami Charbarneau at OCHD at 715-369-6185 or by visiting OCHD’s Facebook page, where a registration link and QR code are available.
