TOMAHAWK – A local business is among dozens of Midwest supper clubs featured in a new book.
Besse’s on Clear Lake, located at W6041 Northern Lights Circle in Tomahawk, is one of the establishments included in Wisconsin Supper Clubs: One for the Road, written by Milwaukee author Ron Faiola.
The new book is Faiola’s fifth focused on supper clubs.
According to a release, Faiola visited more than 45 supper clubs throughout the state, where he interviewed both the restaurateurs and customers. He also traveled to supper clubs in Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota.
“Faiola compiles vibrant stories and vivid photographs, highlighting each club’s distinctive character, owners and classic dishes,” the release said. “The book is organized into geographic sections, a convenient feature for those planning their next road trips. It’s another helping of everything that readers have loved about Faiola’s award-winning series.”
Besse’s on Clear Lake is among the supper clubs located within the book’s North Central Region, joining businesses in Briggsville, Eagle River, Florence, Rhinelander, St. Germain, Waupaca and Weston.
The release said Wisconsin Supper Clubs: One for the Road “embodies the classic traditions of intergenerational community, familial hospitality and delicious food made from scratch, while also expanding to the whole Midwest region.”
“Through these supper clubs’ unique profiles and scenic locations, Faiola demonstrates why this century-old dining tradition is making a comeback,” the release stated. “With beautiful photography, humorous anecdotes and personal interviews that highlight supper clubs’ appeal, Wisconsin Supper Clubs: One for the Road is sure to resonate with readers of all backgrounds.”
Ron Faiola has been called “Wisconsin’s legacy filmmaker” and a “supper club guru.” His bestselling book series on Wisconsin supper clubs helped ignite supper club fever in the Badger State. His critically acclaimed documentary films have appeared on PBS stations nationwide.
Faiola said it “feels wonderful” to have written supper club book number five.
“I’ve been immersed in supper club culture for over 15 years,” he stated. “Having visited around 200 supper clubs in my lifetime, I still find it absolutely fascinating. Especially having witnessed the all-out enthusiasm people have for this special dining tradition. Folks happily share recommendations for new places to try and offer tips on favorite dishes. It certainly wasn’t this way when I started my supper club journey in 2010.”
Faiola noted that although it was fun to revisit businesses for his book Wisconsin Supper Clubs: Second Edition, he wanted to write about establishments that were new to him.
“As far as the title, ‘One for the Road’ means one more bite, one more sip, one more glimpse of a scenic view – but mainly it means that the book should be taken on the road on supper club adventures,” he said. “That way, folks can have the book signed by the supper club owners and staff, creating a nice memento of their travels.”
Faiola’s website, www.wisconsinsupperclubs.com/, includes a map highlighting more than 250 supper clubs throughout the state. Besse’s on Clear Lake, as well as three other Tomahawk businesses – Bootleggers Lodge, Silver Birch Supper Club and Pine Tree Supper Club – are featured on the map.
Wisconsin Supper Clubs: One for the Road will be available for purchase on Amazon on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
