“Despite the girls being down several runners, they managed to take second behind Great Northern Conference (GNC) rival Lakeland,” said coach Connor Ahrens. “This was an uplifting result, as it allows our girls to believe they are much closer to the leading conference team. Our boys were also short on teammates, but attained a third-place finish again behind Lakeland.”
“Though the weather was excellent, our team is recouping from our hardest practice of the season with some higher mileage,” said coach Jerett Flynn. “The race results showed 19 season best performances, a great sign for this time of the season.”
“It was great to see some of our athletes really battle to the finish line,” said coach Steph Ahrens. “Several student-athletes made last-minute moves that moved them up a place or two and others battled through some serious discomfort. If our student-athletes can continue to make these in-race adjustments and continue developing our mental toughness, we will find ourselves right where we need to be come playoff time.”
This week’s action
The next race for the Tomahawk runners is Thursday, Oct. 1st, as the co-ed team travels to Erbach Park for the Athens Invite. The meet gets underway at 5:00 p.m.
On Friday, Oct. 2nd, the team will continue their tradition of the homecoming game ball relay that consists of the team receiving the game ball from the football team during the pep rally and then running 20-plus miles from the direction of Tomahawk’s opponent to the football field in time for the coin flip.
Athletes of the Week
Lucy Nelson – “One of our team’s newest and finest additions is freshman Lucy Nelson. Similar to her sister, she has been improving nearly every single race. Her personal record 5k time just dropped by 32 seconds at the Three Lakes Invite to become a 25:34. This time improvement has also meant moving up her team position, going from 9th at the start of the season to the 6th varsity runner. This is a solid girls’ team, so she will need to work extremely hard to retain her position. That being said, if practices are any indication of her work ethic, she will be better than fine. Lucy is learning the sport of distance running extremely fast, and the coaching staff is sure that she will be a vital runner as we get closer to season’s end.”
Dawson Jones – “It’s said almost every year, but one can’t hide the plain facts: junior Dawson Jones’ consistency and dedication continue to pay off. At the Three Lakes Invite, Dawson broke the 19-minute 5k barrier by running an 18:51 for a new personal record. Dawson continues to be a leader by example and has certainly logged some of the most off-season miles on the team. His aerobic engine and mental determination allow him to cruise at solid paces for a long time where others quit. The coaching staff knows he only needs more speed and adequate recovery before he starts having some truly superb races later this season.”
