Elderly Northwoods residents targeted by bail scam

Posted

NORTHERN WISCONSIN – The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office this week shared information about a scam impacting elderly individuals throughout the Northwoods.

According to a Thursday, Feb. 13 post on the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page, residents of Oneida, Forest and Vilas counties have lost tens of thousands of dollars through a scam where scammers call landlines acting as relatives in custody.

The post said the callers claim they’re working through bail bondsmen and attorneys to collect money for bail.

“These scammers are actually coming to people's residence(s) to collect the money for bond,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “Please share and contact your elderly friends and relatives to make sure they are not giving any money to these people.”

The Sheriff’s Office said bail bondsmen are prohibited in Wisconsin, noting that this is “an elaborate scam that appears to be targeting mostly the elderly.”

“Reminder, we will never come to your residence to collect cash for bond,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

Law enforcement in Oneida, Forest and Vilas counties are working together to identify the individuals involved and the reported vehicles, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Oneida County residents who have provided money to scammers at their residence are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 715-361-5100.
