Finance Committee approves funding for city garage improvements

Posted

TOMAHAWK – The City of Tomahawk Municipal Garage is slated to receive some repairs and updates.

Three improvement projects were approved by the City of Tomahawk Finance Committee during its meeting at City Hall on Tuesday, July 28.

The total estimated cost for all proposed work is $20,575, according to a proposal from City Street Department Leadperson Nick Rosenmeier. The funds will come from the city’s Garage Reserve Fund.

Rosenmeier presented the committee with three projects, with the first being the replacement of the garage’s current hydraulic vehicle lift with an electronic two-post lift.

Rosenmeier explained that the current lift is no longer safe due to a fluid leak that causes the lifted vehicle to lower over a short period of time

“The unit is built into the concrete floor and is so old, there is really no way to repair it,” Rosenmeier stated. “With a new lift, we would be able to do a much more thorough inspection and safer repairs of the fleet of pickup-style trucks, including the bucket truck.”

The cost of the lift, with installation, will be approximately $17,200, according to Rosenmeier.

Lights in the tin shed building are also set to be replaced.

The lights currently in use are eight-foot fluorescent fixtures, with most either being burned out or having bad ballasts. Rosenmeier said he would like to replace the inefficient fixtures with new LED lights, which would brighten the building while saving on operating costs.

The total cost to replace the lights will be about $1,700.

A door on the city garage will also receive needed repairs.

The Public Works Department has been experiencing issues with Door 3 following the installation of a new opener, Rosenmeier said. After Ziebell Door Company conducted several warranty visits, the company determined that the upper tracks are not compatible with the opener. Rosenmeier noted that this was an oversight on the Ziebell Door Company’s part and said the firm has fixed the door free of charge.

“I was informed they will not warranty this opener any longer unless the proper track is installed,” Rosenmeier stated.

The cost to replace the track will be roughly $1,675.

“I realize I have been asking to spend down our garage reserve fund over the last few years, but these are repairs that really need to happen for safety and efficiency reasons,” Rosenmeier stated. “There is no room in the regular budget to pay for these repairs, so this is my only recourse.”

Rosenmeier ultimately requested no more than $23,000 for the repairs, noting that would leave just under $31,000 in the garage reserve fund.

The committee ultimately gave the green light to all three improvement proposals.
