TOMAHAWK – A documentary film focused on the history of Tomahawk will premiere next month.
Tomahawk: City in the Pines will debut in the School District of Tomahawk auditorium on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend the screening.
The film is directed by John Newcombe, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles, Calif.
Newcombe, whose short film Lovestruck won the Academy Award for Student Films Mid-Atlantic Region, was recruited to the Tomahawk project by the film’s producer, Tomahawk native Clay Schmit.
Production of the film was initially announced in June 2024. About a year later, the first trailer for the film was released.
At next month’s screening, Newcombe will be on hand to “speak about why a Hollywood filmmaker would find the Tomahawk story so compelling,” Schmit said.
“Because the film has been funded by generous people and businesses around the city, the screening will be free of charge,” Schmit said.
Following the film’s initial screening, additional events will be held at other local venues through the fall, such as churches with the capacity for large-screen presentations. The film will also be available to view via online streaming options after its debut.
Schmit noted that in addition to the several Tomahawk screenings, the film will be offered at film festivals throughout the state and is being considered for Wisconsin Public Television’s “Wisconsin Hometown Stories” program.
Those who have seen advance previews of Tomahawk: City in the Pines have been “deeply impressed by the quality of (Newcombe’s) art and the compelling nature of the story he has told,” according to Schmit.
Newcombe said he is excited about the project.
“This is the best work I have done in ten years,” he stated.
