TOMAHAWK – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has identified the individual who was involved in a fatal incident near Tomahawk last week.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, on Friday, April 24, just before 5 p.m., a Trooper with the Wisconsin State Patrol initiated a traffic stop on U.S. Hwy. 51 north of County Rd. A. The Sheriff’s Office said the sole occupant of the vehicle fled from the traffic stop, “and during the incident, the driver appears to have sustained a self-inflicted fatal injury.”

On Tuesday, April 28, the Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as Wade B. Johnson, 36, of Minocqua.

The Sheriff’s Office said a Trooper stopped Johnson’s vehicle for an equipment violation. After briefly stopping for the Trooper, Johnson fled from the traffic stop and traveled approximately .25 miles before his vehicle entered the ditch and came to a final rest.

“During that short period of time, Mr. Johnson sustained an apparent self-inflicted injury that he succumbed to,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “Given the extent of the injury that Mr. Johnson sustained, lifesaving measures were not attempted, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

No officers were injured or fired their weapons during the incident.

No further information was provided.
