Street Department reminding residents, businesses not to place advertising yard signs in right-of-way

Posted

TOMAHAWK – The City of Tomahawk Street Department is reminding local residents and businesses not to place advertising yard signs within the city right-of-way.

The city right-of-way is the area between the sidewalk and the street.

City ordinance prohibits placing signs in these areas, and the rule is actively enforced, according to City Street Department Leadperson Nick Rosenmeier.

“Beyond creating visual clutter, these signs can also be unfair to local businesses that invest in approved advertising methods like radio, newspapers or on-site signage,” Rosenmeier said in a post on the city’s Facebook page.

Rosenmeier said signs placed in the right-of-way are removed and disposed of at no cost, and the reminder is meant to save residents and businesses time and money.

“Please avoid placing signs in the right-of-way,” Rosenmeier stated. “And a friendly heads-up – after raising a couple of kids, I’ve gotten pretty good at hide-and-seek, so your sign will likely be found eventually. Thank you for your cooperation.”

City ordinance does not prohibit placing advertising signs on private property.
