The Unasked Question

Posted

Dear Reader,

There’s something curious that happens in everyday conversations—at coffee shops, on planes, in waiting rooms. Someone asks how you’re doing, what you do, what brings you here. You answer, maybe at length, sometimes opening up about real challenges or hopes. And then the conversation just… ends. You check your phone. They move on. The moment closes.

It’s not anyone’s fault. We’re busy, distracted, cautious about our limited time and energy. Talking to strangers feels like a lost art.

But here’s what’s easy to miss: the person asking might actually be able to help. Not in some vague, feel-good way, but concretely. Maybe they know someone hiring in your field. Maybe they’ve solved exactly the problem you’re facing. Maybe they have access to opportunities that could genuinely matter.

The transaction cost of reciprocating is almost nothing. “What about you?” takes two seconds. But it opens a door. It creates the possibility of exchange, of discovering that the stranger making small talk might be exactly who you needed to meet.

When someone engages with you—truly engages, with genuine questions and real attention—consider engaging back. Not out of obligation, but out of curiosity. Out of recognizing that sometimes the most important connections happen in the most unexpected moments.

Because you never know who’s sitting next to you.
