MARSHFIELD — The Tomahawk Middle School (TMS) cross country team opened its 2026 season at the Marshfield Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 8, racing in humid and wet course conditions against a large and competitive field.
The Hatchet boys were led by Aries Messerschmidt, finishing 43rd in 14:56. Max Micke followed in 57th with a strong 15:15 opener. The Hatchets’ scoring pack stayed tight with Kamden Hanse (87th, 16:33), Theo Heier (97th, 16:44), Aydin Michael (117th, 17:30), Evan Zorn (119th, 17:32) and Finn Childers (121st, 17:38) all finishing within a minute of each other.
Additional finishers included Eli Ierulli (124th), Ethan Riebe (125th), Jesse Wallschlaeger (134th), AJ Blaeser (138th), Case Montag (159th), Gabriel Lobermeier (167th), Thomas Totch (171st), Cylus Hilgendorf (178th), Gabe Nelson (190th), Micah Cerkas (193rd), William Wendorf (195th) and Leo Fishbeck (202nd).
The boys placed 12th as a team with 298 points, showing depth and early‑season promise.
The Lady Hatchets were led by Jayda DeVillers, who opened her season with a 6th‑place finish in 14:28. Maci Bandura (37th, 16:17), Stephanie VanAsten (81st, 17:43), Fjola Erickson (87th, 17:51), Allie Reiff (92nd, 17:55) and Emma Childers (107th, 18:45) rounded out the scoring group.
Additional finishers for the Tomahawk girls included Emree Quesinberry (121st), Aspen Pankow (141st), Iona Oates (155th), Ahna Arndt (178th), Adeline Voermans (182nd), Nevaeh Mathis (184th), Allie Maki (186th), Dayze Rounds (190th), Finley Bubolz (198th), Quinn Cordova (200th), Kaylyn Ponsler (201st) and Delilah Rounds (215th).
The girls finished 10th as a team with 240 points, showing encouraging depth for the first meet of the season.

Milestone of the Meet recognizes Tomahawk Middle School cross country athletes who made a meaningful step forward through improvement, effort or positive impact on the team.

Up next, the TMS runners will travel to Horace Mann Middle School in Wausau on Thursday, Sept. 17 for the annual Jr. Smiley Invitational. Races start at 4:30 p.m.
