MEDFORD – The Tomahawk High School (THS) girls’ and boys’ wrestling teams competed in the Great Northern Conference Tournament last week.
Girls’ results
The Tomahawk girls’ wrestling team delivered an impressive showing at the Conference Tournament, finishing third overall with 161 team points.
The Lady Hatchets were in the hunt all day, finishing just behind Merrill (164.5 points) and conference champion Wausau West (186 points), and showing continued improvement in their wrestling skills.
Tomahawk was powered by three individual conference champions, each going undefeated on the day. At 114 pounds, K. Peissig put together a flawless performance, going 4-0 to capture first place with strong technical wrestling throughout the tournament. K. Gabrich was dominant at 185 pounds, also finishing 4-0 to earn a conference title, while A. Doleshal capped off the championship trio with a perfect 4-0 record and a first-place finish at 235 pounds.
Several Lady Hatchets reached the finals or podiumed in highly competitive brackets. A. Rosenmeier (107) wrestled her way to a second-place finish, going 3-1 on the day after a strong run to the championship match. At 120 pounds, C. Thompson earned a third-place finish with a 3-1 record, and L. Taves (126) matched that result, also finishing third after going 3-1.
Tomahawk continued to pick up valuable team points across the lineup. V. Towle (100) battled through her bracket to finish fourth, posting a 2-2 record, while A. Cerkes (145) also placed fourth with a 2-2 day. S. Roberts (132) and K. Roberts (138) each finished fifth, both going 2-2 in tough weight classes.
The Lady Hatchets’ combination of conference champions, finalists, and depth performances fueled their strong third-place team finish. With multiple wrestlers standing atop the podium and others gaining key postseason experience.
Boys’ results
The Tomahawk boys wrestling team turned in a strong overall performance at the Great Northern Conference Tournament, placing third as a team with 171.5 points.
The Hatchets finished just behind Antigo (173 points) and conference champion Merrill (217.5 points), showcasing depth across the lineup and earning multiple podium finishes.
Tomahawk was led by a pair of conference champions. At 165 pounds, Z. Zehner dominated the field, going a perfect 4-0 on the day to claim first place. Zehner’s run included consistent scoring and solid mat control throughout the tournament. Joining him at the top of the podium was N. Norman at 215 pounds, who also finished 4-0, securing first place and providing a big boost to the Hatchets’ team total.
Several Tomahawk wrestlers battled their way into the finals and came away with runner-up finishes. O. Oats (113) went 3-1 to finish second, setting the tone early for the Hatchets. Z. Larson (120) matched that effort with a 3-1 record and a second-place finish, while W. Horabik (144) also went 3-1 to earn second place. At 175 pounds, K. Kapellusch fought his way to the finals, finishing second with a 3-1 record, and H. Evans (190) added another runner-up finish after going 3-1 on the day.
Tomahawk also picked up key points from several wrestlers who placed in tough brackets. D. Jones (126) went 3-1 to earn third place, and heavyweight T. Bridges (285) also finished third with a 3-1 record. M. Towle (150) contributed with a fourth-place finish after going 2-2, while D. Islo (132) finished fifth, posting a 2-2 record.
Overall, the Hatchets’ balance of champions, finalists and depth performers propelled them to a strong third-place showing in the conference standings. With multiple wrestlers peaking at the right time, Tomahawk heads forward with momentum as postseason competition continues.
Recent action
The Lady Hatchets were slated to compete at the Regional tournament in Merrill on Friday, Feb. 13.
The boys wrestling team were scheduled to compete at Sectionals in Antigo on Saturday, Feb. 14.
