WAUSAU – Aspirus Health last month announced the opening of a new neonatal clinic.
The Aspirus Neonatal Clinic is located at 2720 Plaza Drive on Aspirus’s Wausau campus.
In a release, Aspirus said the clinic will provide highly specialized services based on an infant’s needs for up to the first two to three years after a NICU admission or concerns of developmental delays noticed by Primary Care Providers.
A multidisciplinary care team will include neonatologists, as well as physical, speech, language and occupational therapists.
“The goal of the Aspirus Neonatal Clinic is to screen and address post-discharge issues in the first two years of life, with screenings and potential interventions during the 3rd, 6th, 12th, 18th and 24th month – crucial periods offering the greatest potential positive effects and outcomes,” Aspirus stated. “Neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to grow) is highest during the first two years of life, and interventions during this time period significantly improves outcomes.”
Aspirus said preterm and sick term infants are at a high risk for developmental delays in growth, speech, motor skills and overall cognitive development. Premature and sick term infants are at increased risk of neurodevelopment disabilities and cerebral palsy, according to the release.
“The Aspirus Neonatal Clinic demonstrates Aspirus Health’s commitment to our most vulnerable patients,” said Pankaj Nagaraj, MD, a Board-certified neonatologist. “We are proud to offer such vital services to central Wisconsin families. By providing the most effective interventions at crucial developmental stages, we are setting up these fragile infants with the greatest potential for positive outcomes and the best chances of a healthy, happy life.”
