THS Building Trades class builds toddler playhouse for Nokomis Park

TOMAHAWK – This spring, Tomahawk High School (THS) Building Trades students took their skills beyond the classroom and into the community by completing a meaningful, hands-on project.

The Hatchet high schoolers recently completed work on a custom-built toddler playhouse for Nokomis Park, located north of Tomahawk on County Rd. L in the Town of Nokomis.

Instructor Andy Peissig explained that throughout the semester, students applied what they’ve learned in carpentry, design and construction to plan and build the playhouse from the ground up.

“From reading blueprints and measuring materials to framing, fastening and finishing, every step of the process was student-driven,” Peissig said. “The project challenged them to think critically, work collaboratively and maintain high standards for safety and craftsmanship.”

The effort, Peissig noted, was more than just a construction project – it was “an opportunity for students to give back to a space that serves many local families.”

“Knowing that younger children will be able to enjoy something they built has given students a strong sense of pride and ownership in their work,” he stated.

In addition to developing technical skills, students gained valuable experience in teamwork, problem-solving and project management – skills that will serve them well in future careers and everyday life, according to Peissig, who added that the students also learned the importance of community involvement and how their abilities can make a real difference.

“We are proud of the dedication and effort these students demonstrated, and we’re excited for the community to enjoy the finished playhouse at Nokomis Park,” Peissig said. “Be sure to stop by and take a look at their outstanding work.”
