Tomahawk’s Kurth, Stefan awarded Manito Art League scholarships

TOMAHAWK – Two Tomahawk college students were recently awarded scholarships from an area nonprofit that promotes art in the Northwoods.

The Manito Art League (MAL) awarded $26,000 in scholarships to nine regional students to support their higher education in the creative and performing arts.

The MAL is a Manitowish Waters-based group that presents an Annual Art Show, a scholarship program, workshops and the Northwoods Outdoor Artists plein air group that paints and draws weekly at a variety of outdoor locations in the Northwoods.

“Our group is made up of area and seasonal artists, and we welcome anyone at any level to join us to make art and make friends,” the organization’s website states.

Among this year’s MAL scholarship recipients are Greta Kurth and Brynnen Stefan, both of Tomahawk.

Kurth was awarded the Florence Daniels Memorial Scholarship. She is studying Creative Writing and Music Education at Lawrence University.

Brynnen Stefan, who is studying Piano Performance and Neuroscience at Luther College, was awarded an MAL scholarship.

Students from Butternut, Eagle River, Park Falls and Rhinelander also received scholarships.

A release from the MAL said this year’s awards push the organization’s lifetime scholarship awards to nearly $355,000, funded entirely through the generosity of Northwoods patrons, families and memorial gifts.

“Because of the support of our patrons, we have been fortunate to grow our scholarship awards to help local families keep pace with the rising cost of higher education," said MAL President Sandra Cashman.

The MAL said special recognition is extended to David Ullrich for supporting the Polly Ullrich Scholarship; Kay Lorbiecki for establishing the Presque Isle Fine Arts Scholarship; and the families who founded the Barbara McFarland, Sharon Drawz and Florence Daniels memorial funds.

The public is invited to celebrate this year’s scholarship recipients at MAL’s 61st annual Art Show and Sale, slated to be held from Thursday, July 16 through Saturday, July 19 at the Manitowish Waters Community Center.
