Annual Rod Timm Memorial Tournament hosted by Tomahawk Youth Softball

Posted

TOMAHAWK – Four Tomahawk Hatchet youth softball traveling teams took to the field to defend their home diamonds as they hosted the annual Rod Timm Memorial Tournament from Friday, July 17 through Sunday, July 19 at SARA Park.

Event organizers estimated approximately 1,000 attendees per day, as many teams enjoy Tomahawk and the Rod Timm Tournament as an annual vacation destination.

The tournament was named after Rod Timm, a local sports legend born just east of Tomahawk. Rod played professional and semi-professional baseball in the 1940s and ‘50s. An accomplished pitcher, Rod still holds many Wisconsin Valley League records, including recording five strikeouts in one inning (two third strike passed balls). Following Rod’s passing in 1999, the family agreed to donate money to the Tomahawk Girls Softball program, and the Rod Timm Tournament was born.

Twenty-nine teams from northern Wisconsin made up this year’s field. Participants included levels from 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U and 16/18U.

All four Hatchet teams performed well over the weekend, as three of the four participating teams made it to the championship game.

The 8U team finished at 3-2. These resilient ladies fought back from an 0-2 record in pool play to run the table in bracket play to secure an extra innings 7-6 win over Rhinelander. 8U is coached by Dave Reiff and Jeff Hilgendorf.

10U put on a great showing for the home crowd by making a championship game appearance, but ultimately lost to Medford 2-1. 10U finished the tournament 3-1, going 2-0 in pool play and winning their bracket. Their other games included wins against Medford 3-2, Rhinelander Black 5-1 and Marshfield 2-0 in bracket play. 10U is coached by Jessica Shore and Jeremy Theiler.

The 12U team also made a championship game appearance and won handedly vs. Medford 9-3. Tomahawk completed pool play with a 2-0 record, also winning their bracket. Tomahawk beat Medford 4-1, Lakeland 20-0 and Sandlot 12-0 in bracket play. The Hatchets 12U outscored their opponents by a whopping 45-4. 12U is coached by Jeff “Buck” Olson and Ron Volz.

Finally, the 18U/16U finished their tournament Sunday, going 2-2. The Hatchet American Legion squad, made up of a mix of varsity and JV players, ended with a loss to eventual champion Mosinee Elite 14-0.  Tomahawk also dropped a game to Sandlot 8-3. Their two wins included a 9-3 victory over NW Thunder and 9-1 victory over Marshfield.  This squad was coached by Abby Kraklow, Kendra Ziert and Heidi Micke.
