SEYMOUR – Last week, the Tomahawk High School boys’ swim team traveled southeast to Seymour for a meet.
Coach Theresa L’Esperance said the Hatchet swimmers “knew the meet would be difficult to win, but with positive attitudes, they gave Shawano/Seymour good give and go.”
“Shawano/Seymour is a Division 1 team, but they are in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) and will give the Hatchets a run for second place behind Rhinelander at the end of the season,” L’Esperance stated.
Tomahawk’s A and B medley relays placed 1st and 3rd, respectively, to lead the way, L’Esperance said, adding that Bruce Peetz and Aidan Sigl improved in their breaststroke legs.
Michael Lucas led the team with three personal bests, improving his backstroke in the medley relay, and improving in the 50 free (35.96) and the 100 free (1:22.49).
Toby Scott had two personal records.
“T. Scott has perfected swimming all four strokes efficiently,” L’Esperance stated. “He swam the fly for the medley relay for the first time (39.35), and then improved his IM by four seconds. He then swam a personal record in the 400 free relay with a 1:18.94. Toby has become a great leader in the pool.”
L’Esperance said Bruce Peetz continues to swim fast, noting that he won both the 50 free and 100 butterfly to lead the Hatchets in points.
Second-place finishes included the 200 and 400 free relays, as well as Dane DeKiep.
“DeKiep felt the pain of swimming long distance,” L’Esperance said. “His time of 5:36.13 is very respectable, but only good enough for 2nd place.”
Eli Scott continues to improve, according to L’Esperance.
“E. Scott is a first-year swimmer,” L’Esperance said. “He is improving daily.”
L’Esperance said a noticeable difference between the Hatchet swimmers and the Shawano/Seymour team was the “quality of each swimmer.”
“We focus on developmental swimming,” she stated. “We don’t flail or struggle to finish a race. Swimming correctly is the first step; then we focus on strength and speed. Our team is very young, but there is hope for some great times at the end of the season by swimming fundamentally sound. “
This week’s action
The Tomahawk swimmers were scheduled to host Medford and Wausau East for a double dual on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
On Thursday, Dec. 18, the Hatchets are slated to travel to Rhinelander for a meet.
