Boys’ swimming: Tomahawk takes on rivals in GNC Championship Meet

Posted

MINOCQUA – The Tomahawk High School boys’ swim team recently competed at the Great Northern Conference (GNC) Championship Meet, hosted by Lakeland.

“There is one thing you can count on at a Great Northern Conference Championship, is that friendships between schools dissolve, competition ensues, yet admiration shines,” said coach Theresa L’Esperance. “Swimmers revel in the idea of relays and team rivalries. Our relays achieved the greatest success of the night, but it was the 400 free relay that received Honorable Mention to finish the evening.”

L’Esperance said practice during the week involved four different sets of practices.

“We had athletes tapered fully for conference, athletes that were somewhat tapered for Conference, athletes that were almost ready and slightly tapered, and then two of our athletes that were tapering for State,” L’Esperance explained. “Our boys swam exactly as I expected them to.”

Fischer and Scott began the evening with personal records in the medley, 100 free and the 400 free relay, according to L’Esperance.

Amelse and Schumacher swam into the night slightly tapered, with hopes of faster goals next week, L’Esperance said. Both set PRs in the IM and 400 free relay, respectively.

L’Esperance said Germano and Sigl are in the middle of their taper for sectional.

“This is a difficult time in an athlete's taper, but both athletes improved just slightly,” she stated. “I believe both will drop big time next week.”

Both Peetz and DeKiep are hoping to qualify for the State meet. L’Esperance said they are both in the beginning of their taper to qualify for the State meet.

“I was pleased with their performances at the meet,” L’Esperance said. “Peetz qualified 2nd team All-Conference in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, and Dane led the 400 free relay to an Honorable Mention place.”

Upcoming action

Sectionals are slated to be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, followed by the State meet on Friday, Feb. 20.
