BOND FALLS, MICH. – Carrying on a years-long tradition, the Tomahawk High School (THS) cross country team began its season at Bond Falls, Mich., with the team’s annual cross country camp, followed later by the Alumni Scrimmage.

Thirty-five THS student-athletes attended the season opening cross country camp near Paulding, Mich. This marked the 31st annual camp, which began in 1995.
Throughout the week, student-athletes surpassed 30 miles of running by training twice daily while also bonding and enjoying a variety of team-building games and activities.
Alumni Scrimmage
On Saturday, Aug. 22, the Hatchet harriers hosted the 25th annual Alumni Scrimmage at the entrance to Bradley Park. The 2026 Hatchets competed against former alumni and local members of TARA (Tomahawk Area Runners Association).
The race takes runners through the main loop of Bradley Park multiple times, including a challenging trip through the hilly “Hog’s Back” trail and onto the Mirror Lake section.
Winning the race overall and leading the alumni in the 5000 meter men’s event was 2012 graduate and 5th year head coach Connor Ahrens in a time of 18:43.
Other alumni finishers were Sam Zastrow (Class of 2025-2nd), middle school coach Justin Lund (Class of 2000-8th), Caiden Reichelt (Class of 2026-11th), Bruce Peetz (Class of 2026-14th), Jacob Mareno (coach-15th), assistant coach Jerett Flynn (Class of 2019-16th), Owen Dickrell (Class of 2024-17th), Dominic Boos (Class of 2025-19th), Kurt Reinke (coach-23rd), Presley Gutbrod (Class of 2024-26th), Ty Anthes (Class of 2023-27th), Gary Buchanan (Class of 1975-28th), Cody Strassman (Class of 2012-30th) and Jacob Miller (Class of 2018-35th).
The high school team was led by junior Dawson Jones in a time of 19:32 for a 3rd-place finish.
Other high school finishers were Connor Zorn (4th-20:16), Jordyn Carew (5th-20:59), Joe Zastrow (6th-21:13), Luke Morrison (7th-21:25), Will Boneck (9th-21:58), Andrew Voermans (10th-22:01), Karson Hanse (12th-22:13), Ryan Montag (13th-22:17), Bodie Olsen (18th-23:28), Jonathan Crossman (20th-23:33), Max Childers (21st-23:40), Sam Ford (22nd-24:10), Tripp Tabbert (24th-25:47), Levi Cerkas (25th-26:04), Isaac Urmann (29th-26:48), Eli Scott (31st-29:08), Liam Fossum (32nd-30:19), Chastin Dziura (33rd-31:05) and Vallyn Ott (34th-31:11).
“Despite the challenge of a high mileage week, the high school boys still came out victorious over the alumni with an unofficial score of 25 to the alumni’s 36,” Ahrens said. “This now makes it the 5th year in a row that the high school boys team has beaten the alumni.”
The alumni women’s team was led by 2012 graduate and volunteer coach Stephanie Ahrens, who took 1st overall in the women’s race with a time of 21:34.
Other alumni finishers were Amanda Koshak (Class of 2012-3rd), Halle Derleth (Class of 2024-4th) and Shirley Russell (Class of 1987-15th).
The high school girls were again led by sophomore Charlee Lund, who ran the course in a time of 22:28. Other Hatchet finishers were Elise Gibeault (5th-23:39), Abbie Rosenmeier (6th-24:57), Ellie Micke (7th-24:59), Aliyah Nelson (8th-26:15), Norah Mann (9th-26:33), Victoria Towle (10th-27:22), Joa Reilly (11th-27:38), Lucy Nelson (12th-27:57), Alaina Stogbauer (13th-31:02), and Savannah Reinke (14th-34:48).
For the 11th year in a row, the high school girls beat their alumni competitors, scoring 28 points, Ahrens noted.
This week’s action
The Hatchets will begin the season with their first official invite on Thursday, Aug. 27, at Rhinelander. The first race begins at 10 a.m. at Rhinelander High School.
