MERRILL – The Tomahawk High School (THS) girls’ swim team began their season with a meet in Merrill on Thursday, Aug. 20.
Also competing were Merrill, Antigo, Colby, D.C. Everest, Ladysmith, Lakeland, Marshfield, Medford, Mosinee, Stevens Point, Wausau and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln.
Coach Megan Backes said having a variety of relay events made it a fun first meet of the season.
“We participated in all the events that are unique and we don't do the rest of the season,” Backes stated.
In the 500 relay, where each athlete does a different distance – 50 yard, 100 yards, 50 yards and 200 yards – the Lady Hatchet swimmers placed 9th out of 20 teams with a time of 5:58.24. Aubrey Tollefson's lead off split was a PR breaking 30 seconds at 29.99.
Tomahawk’s 200 backstroke relay took 8th place out of 19 teams with a time of 2:31.99.
The 200 breaststroke relay placed 10th with a time of 2:52.09, and the 200 butterfly relay took 12th place with a time of 2:26.61
“One thing the team worked hard on go into this meet was their underwater work, and I was happy to see that they brought those skills into the meet,” Backes said. “I'm looking forward to continue to watch the girls improve and cheer each other on.”
